A six-year-old woman is in a “very critical” situation after being caught beneath a tree which collapsed in an Essex park.

A seven-year-old woman was killed and three extra youngsters sustained minor accidents and obtained hospital remedy after the tree fell in Chalkwell Park, Southend-on-Sea, shortly earlier than 3pm on Saturday.

Police are investigating what occurred and an space has been arrange for the laying of flowers and tributes.

Assistant Chief Constable Lucy Morris of Essex Police stated: “Updates will probably be supplied on the situation of the little woman who stays in hospital.

Dozens noticed the incident and rushed to attempt to raise the tree, a witness stated.

Accountant Ishan Madan, 39, from Westcliff-on-Sea, was enjoying in a cricket match close by when he heard a “horrendous, screeching scream”.

He stated: “Everybody ran in direction of the clubhouse, the place the tree is.

“The tree had snapped and I believe there have been 4 youngsters, the fifth one was barely additional away, I believe she’d been hit by a department.

“Two of them have been underneath a smaller department, they have been rescued simply, and sadly, the opposite two women, they have been caught underneath this large tree.

Mr Madan stated that he had heard the kids have been strolling on a path when the tree fell.

He continued: “You’d by no means assume one thing like this might occur and there have been lots of people at our membership that have been shocked, together with myself. It was horrendous.

“It was like a nightmare that you simply’d type of get up from after which somebody would inform you it wasn’t true.

“You couldn’t think about children strolling within the park and one thing like this taking place.”

Chief Superintendent Leighton Hammett stated that those that rushed to assist “confirmed the most effective of Southend”.
